Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern
warning to the Nigerian government over alleged killings of Christians,
threatening to halt all American aid and potentially authorize military
intervention.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump
said:
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the
killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance
to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country,
‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are
committing these horrible atrocities.”
He further claimed to have instructed the U.S.
“Department of War” to prepare for possible military action, vowing that any
attack “will be fast, vicious, and sweet.”
Trump’s remarks came a day after he declared Nigeria a
“Country of Particular Concern,” accusing the government of failing to protect
Christians from what he described as a “mass slaughter.”
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in
Nigeria,” he wrote. “Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical
Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. The United States cannot
stand by while such atrocities are happening.”
He also directed Congressman Riley Moore and House
Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole to investigate the situation.
Tinubu Dismisses Allegations, Reaffirms
Commitment to Religious Freedom
Responding on Saturday, President Bola Tinubu rejected
Trump’s assertions, maintaining that Nigeria remains a nation of religious
freedom and tolerance.
In a personally signed statement, Tinubu said the
characterization of Nigeria as intolerant “does not reflect our national
reality” and fails to acknowledge ongoing government efforts to protect all
religious groups.
“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by
constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” the president said. “Religious
freedom and tolerance have been core tenets of our collective identity and
shall always remain so.”
Tinubu explained that since 2023, his administration
has maintained open engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders while
working to address security challenges across all regions.
“Our administration continues to engage actively with
leaders of all faiths and remains committed to working with the U.S. government
and the international community to deepen cooperation in protecting communities
of every religion,” he added.
