Former Super Eagles midfielder Femi Ajilore has
emphasized the importance of unity, strategic planning, and unwavering support
as Nigeria sets its sights on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a recent interview, Ajilore reacted to the
appointment of Eric Chelle as the new Super Eagles head coach, expressing mixed
feelings about the decision.
“For me, I know the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)
must have gone through a lot of screening and brainstorming before making their
choice. They probably made significant efforts to secure the world-class coach
they promised Nigerians, but unfortunately, it seems they couldn’t agree on
terms due to the current situation we find ourselves in.”
While acknowledging the concerns of Nigerian fans,
Ajilore urged everyone to rally behind the team and the new coach.
“I believe they eventually settled on someone who
aligns with their vision. I wouldn’t say I’m completely disappointed, but I can
understand the expectations of Nigerians, including myself, especially after
the promise of a world-class coach.”
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers underway, Ajilore
stressed that success will depend not only on coaching decisions but also on
team cohesion, proper planning, and strong support from all stakeholders.
As the Super Eagles embark on their qualification
journey, all eyes will be on Chelle and his squad, with fans hoping that the
team can overcome challenges and secure a spot on football’s biggest stage.
