Rohr Hails Chelle’s Appointment as Super Eagles Coach,
Says It a Step in the Right Direction
Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has endorsed the
appointment of Eric Chelle as Nigeria’s new head coach, describing it as a step
in the right direction. Rohr, who led Nigeria for almost six years, believes
Chelle has the tactical ability and experience needed to guide the team to
success in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of
Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
“Nigeria has a new coach who is well known in France
as a good tactician,” Rohr said. “So you can say they are not joking with the
remaining games in the World Cup qualifiers, which will mean my team (Benin
Republic) needing to work harder.”
Rohr highlighted Chelle’s strong reputation in France
as both a former player and coach, expressing confidence in his ability to lead
Nigeria to greatness.
Interestingly, Chelle edged out Rohr for the Mali
national team job two years ago when both applied. Now, the 47-year-old will be
aiming for another triumph by guiding Nigeria—currently fifth in their six-team
group—to overtake joint leaders Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic, who
are four points ahead.
With crucial qualifiers ahead, Chelle’s tenure will be
under intense scrutiny as he looks to restore Nigeria’s dominance on the
continent and secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
