The Nigerian Army has announced the successful
destruction of several Boko Haram camps in a recent operation in the
North-East, though it confirmed that a Lieutenant Colonel and a few
other soldiers lost their lives during the fierce encounter.
According to a statement by the Acting Director of
Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the
operation disrupted the terrorists’ plans to attack civilians and destabilise
socio-economic activities in the area.
“During the operation, the troops engaged the
terrorists in a fierce gunfight and neutralised several, while others suffered
injuries,” the statement read. “However, the encounter took its toll on our
side, as the Commanding Officer, 202 Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel
Aliyu Saidu Paiko, and a few other valiant soldiers paid the supreme
price.”
The Army hailed the fallen personnel as heroes who
“fought for the peace of our great nation,” adding that their legacies “shall
endure forever.”
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General
Olufemi Oluyede, extended condolences to the families of the deceased,
describing them as “fathers, brothers, and sons who displayed immeasurable
courage by taking the last stand in the face of adversity.”
He reaffirmed the Army’s determination to eliminate
terrorism and restore peace and stability nationwide.
“In the spirit of respect and compassion, members of
the public and the media are kindly advised to refrain from sharing or
publishing images of personnel who have paid the supreme price during
operations until their next of kin have been duly informed,” the Army added.
