Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of signing Bruno
Guimarães after reaching an agreement in principle with Newcastle United
for the Brazilian midfielder.
According to French outlet L'Equipe, the two
Premier League clubs have agreed on a deal worth £77 million, with
additional performance-related bonuses included in the package.
Although the transfer has not yet been officially
completed, the report says the move is now in its final stages, with only the
remaining formalities left before it is confirmed.
Newcastle had initially been reluctant to sell their
captain, particularly after already losing several key players, including Sandro
Tonali and Anthony Gordon, during the summer transfer window.
However, Arsenal's determination to strengthen their
midfield reportedly convinced the Magpies to negotiate the transfer.
The report also claims that Guimarães informed
Newcastle officials several weeks ago of his desire to leave the club, paving
the way for negotiations over his departure.
The 28-year-old was notably absent when Newcastle's
squad travelled to La Manga, Spain, for their pre-season training camp
on Friday, further fueling speculation that his exit is imminent.
If completed, Guimarães' departure would mark another
significant setback for Newcastle supporters, coming shortly after the
unexpected exit of former manager Eddie Howe.
The transfer would also benefit Lyon,
Guimarães' former club, which is expected to receive more than €8 million
through a sell-on clause included in the original transfer agreement.
Arsenal view Guimarães as a key addition to their
squad as they continue strengthening ahead of the new season, with the
Brazilian expected to bring leadership, creativity, and defensive solidity to
Mikel Arteta's midfield.
