Arteta Calls Brighton Defeat a ‘Big Lesson’ as Arsenal’s Perfect Start Ends

Mikel Arteta has described Arsenal’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton as a “big lesson” after the Gunners suffered their first setback of the season at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton controlled much of the encounter from the opening whistle and repeatedly exposed Arsenal’s usually disciplined defence. Pascal Gross opened the scoring with a long-range effort before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the hosts’ advantage before the break.

Brighton added a third shortly after the restart when Chema Andres rose above the Arsenal defence to head home from a corner.

The result marked Arsenal’s heaviest defeat by more than two goals in more than three years and brought an end to their perfect start to the campaign.

Speaking after the match, Arteta acknowledged that Brighton deserved the victory.

“Extremely disappointed. First of all, I think we have to congratulate Brighton for the victory; I think they deserve it,” the Arsenal manager said.

“I think they were the better team. From our side, there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”

Arsenal had entered the match with significant expectations after ending a 22-year wait to win the English league title last season. The Gunners had also won all seven of their matches in all competitions before the trip to Brighton.

However, Arteta said the defeat should serve as a reminder of the demands required to compete consistently at the highest level.

With the international break providing a three-week pause, the Spanish coach said the result offered an opportunity for his players to reflect and learn from the performance.

“It’s a big lesson for us,” Arteta said. “That’s not going to take away what the team has done, and the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup.”

He also praised the team’s efforts during the opening weeks of the campaign, particularly after 18 players returned from international duty.

“With 18 players coming back, what we’ve done and the way we’ve competed and the amount of games we’ve won has been remarkable,” he added.

“But this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level.”
