Serhou Guirassy’s Dortmund side moved to the top of
the Bundesliga after Maximilian Beier scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory
over Stuttgart on Saturday.
Beier converted Jobe Bellingham’s low cross with 20
minutes remaining to give Dortmund their first league-top position since May
2023, when they surrendered the title after drawing with Mainz on the final day
of the season.
The victory also marked Dortmund’s first time winning
their opening four Bundesliga matches in a decade.
“Sounds good to me. We’ll take that,” Beier told Sky
Germany after the game.
The forward entered the match motivated by the
disappointment of being left out of Jurgen Klopp’s expanded 44-man Germany
squad announced on Thursday. Beier had previously been part of Germany’s squad
for the World Cup.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac praised the forward’s
response to the setback, saying, “Life writes great stories… I’m happy for
him.”
Beier had an early opportunity to put Dortmund ahead
but headed wide from close range after just four minutes. Stuttgart also
threatened before the interval, with former Leicester City forward Bilal El
Khannouss shooting narrowly wide.
Dortmund summer signing Konstantinos Karetsas returned
to action as a second-half substitute after recovering from a cardiovascular
issue that saw him stretchered off during a Champions League match earlier in
September.
With 20 minutes left, Karetsas produced a clever pass
to Bellingham, who drove a low cross into the box for Beier to finish and
secure all three points for the visitors.
Frankfurt Hold Freiburg to Draw
Freiburg missed the opportunity to remain at the top
of the Bundesliga after being held to a 2-2 draw away at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Bayern Munich had moved above Freiburg following their
emphatic 7-0 victory over Union Berlin on Friday, while Saturday’s draw saw
Freiburg drop points for the first time this season.
Frankfurt took the lead after 10 minutes when Younes
Ebnoutalib completed a well-worked team move, just days after receiving his
first Germany call-up.
Freiburg responded through Derry Scherhant before
Jonathan Burkardt restored Frankfurt’s advantage.
Scherhant then turned provider, setting up Yuito
Suzuki for Freiburg’s second goal as the visitors earned a point. The result
left Freiburg level with Bayern on 10 points.
Fuellkrug Helps Bremen Complete Comeback
Niclas Fuellkrug continued his impressive return to
Germany by scoring for the third consecutive Bundesliga match as Werder Bremen
recovered from two goals down to beat Augsburg 3-2.
The West Ham loanee levelled the contest with a
powerful long-range strike in the 86th minute before former Bayern Munich
defender Mitchell Weiser completed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner.
Elsewhere, Hamburg recorded their first goal, victory
and points of the season with a 2-1 home win over Cologne.
Albert Gronbaek provided assists for Nicolas Capaldo
and Yussuf Poulsen as Hamburg moved off the bottom of the table.
Borussia Monchengladbach dropped into last place after
suffering a fourth consecutive defeat, losing 4-3 at home to Mainz.
The result came only days after the club parted ways
with coach Eugen Polanski. Gladbach also missed a penalty during the match and
remain the only Bundesliga team without a point after four rounds of fixtures.
