Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has officially switched his
international allegiance to Nigeria, completing a nationality change approved
by FIFA.
The decision, recorded on April 6, 2026, reflects his
transition from representing England’s Football Association to being registered
under the Nigeria Football Federation.
Born in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo
previously represented England at youth levels during his time with Arsenal,
featuring in several junior categories, including the Under-18 team. However,
he never made an appearance for the senior national side, making him eligible
to switch allegiance under FIFA regulations.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper spent the 2023 season on
loan at Wrexham before securing a permanent move in 2024. Since then, he has
established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the English
Championship, delivering consistent performances that have drawn attention.
Between 2015 and 2019, Okonkwo featured for England
across multiple youth levels, from Under-15 to Under-18, gaining valuable
international experience early in his career.
His switch to Nigeria comes after initial contact with
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London. However,
administrative delays meant he was unable to participate in the 2025 Africa Cup
of Nations in Morocco.
Okonkwo’s inclusion is expected to strengthen
Nigeria’s goalkeeping options, joining a pool that includes Stanley Nwabali,
Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho.
With his form at club level and international
eligibility now confirmed, he is seen as a promising addition to the Super
Eagles squad ahead of upcoming competitions.
