Aston Villa continued their impressive Premier League
form with a 1–0 victory over Manchester City, earning their fourth
consecutive league win and a third straight home triumph over Pep
Guardiola’s side.
The result was the perfect response for Villa
following their shock Europa League defeat to Go Ahead Eagles on
Thursday. It also lifted Unai Emery’s men into seventh place, while
ending City’s nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions and
leaving them six points behind leaders Arsenal.
The decisive moment came in the 19th minute
when Villa worked a short corner to Emiliano Buendia, whose cross found Matty
Cash on the edge of the area. The Polish international controlled well
before curling a low shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma into the bottom corner.
City nearly equalised moments later through Erling
Haaland, but his effort was too close to Emiliano Martinez after
fine work by Bernardo Silva.
From then on, Villa controlled the game and could have
added to their lead, with John McGinn and Ollie Watkins both
going close. Substitute Jadon Sancho twice tested Donnarumma in the
second half, but the City keeper stood firm.
City pressed hard late on and thought they had
levelled in the 89th minute, but Haaland’s close-range finish was
disallowed for offside in the build-up involving Phil Foden.
Villa held on for a deserved victory, underlining
their credentials as serious contenders for a European spot this season.
