The Israeli military has accused United Nations
peacekeepers of deliberately shooting down one of its drones near the
Israel–Lebanon border.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Israeli
Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani said the
incident occurred near Kfar Kila in southern Lebanon during a routine
intelligence-gathering mission.
“Yesterday, an IDF intelligence-gathering drone was
downed in the area of Kfar Kila in southern Lebanon during a routine
intelligence-gathering activity in the area,” Shoshani said.
He added that an initial investigation indicated that forces
from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stationed nearby “deliberately
fired at the drone and downed it.”
“The drone’s activity did not pose a threat to UNIFIL
forces,” the spokesman noted.
The IDF said it is reviewing the incident and will
communicate its findings to UNIFIL through appropriate diplomatic channels.
There has been no immediate comment from UNIFIL,
which patrols the southern Lebanon border area under a UN mandate aimed at
maintaining peace between Israel and Hezbollah-backed militants.
