Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Nigerian
international Ademola Lookman, with the 28-year-old attacker committing his
future to the Spanish giants until June 30, 2030.
The right-footed winger joins the former La Liga
champions from Atalanta in a deal reportedly valued at around €40 million
($47.5 million), according to European media reports.
Lookman arrives in Madrid off the back of an
impressive spell in Italy, where he memorably scored a hat-trick to lead
Atalanta to a historic Europa League triumph over Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.
Although his output this season has been modest, with
three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions, Atletico view the
versatile forward as a key addition capable of injecting pace, creativity and
goal threat into Diego Simeone’s attack.
Born in London, Lookman began his professional career
at Charlton Athletic before earning a move to Everton. He later joined RB
Leipzig, initially on loan, and signed permanently in 2019. His time in Germany
included loan spells back in the Premier League with Fulham and Leicester City,
before his switch to Atalanta in 2022.
Simeone has been eager to strengthen his squad
following the departure of Giacomo Raspadori to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher’s
move to Tottenham earlier in the winter transfer window.
Atletico’s need for attacking reinforcements has been
heightened by Julian Alvarez’s struggles in front of goal, with the striker
failing to score in his last 11 La Liga appearances.
