The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed
that six people lost their lives while 23 others sustained injuries in a lone
trailer accident in Ogun State.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Odunsin
Afolabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta.
According to Afolabi, the crash occurred at about
11:27 a.m., with emergency responders arriving at the scene within two minutes.
The accident involved a DAF CF 380 trailer bearing registration number SNA 287
XA.
“In total, 29 persons were involved in the crash.
Twenty-three sustained varying degrees of injuries, while six persons died,” he
said.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the
incident to driver fatigue and excessive speed, which reportedly caused the
driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Afolabi also cautioned motorists against the practice
of transporting passengers alongside livestock, stressing that such mixed
loading complicates rescue efforts during emergencies and often leads to
avoidable fatalities.
Victims of the accident, including both the injured
and deceased, were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital at the GOFAMINT Camp in
Ogunmakin, as well as Victory Hospital in Ogere.
The FRSC has renewed its call on motorists, especially
operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to carry out regular vehicle inspections and
maintenance. Drivers were also urged to adhere strictly to speed limits, remain
alert while driving, and comply with all road safety regulations to prevent
similar tragedies.
