Newcastle United delivered a major blow to Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes as Harvey Barnes’ second-half brace secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at St James’ Park on Saturday.

City fell behind when Barnes opened the scoring, only for Ruben Dias to quickly equalize for Pep Guardiola’s side. But moments later, Barnes netted Newcastle’s controversial second goal, which stood after a lengthy VAR review for a potential offside involving Bruno Guimaraes.

Guardiola’s frustrations extended to a first-half penalty appeal by Phil Foden, which went unheeded by the referee. The defeat marked Manchester City’s fourth league loss of the season, leaving them third in the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal, who face Tottenham on Sunday.

Despite a 3-0 victory over Liverpool before the international break that had boosted City’s momentum, the team struggled on Tyneside. Erling Haaland, aiming for his 100th league goal in 109 appearances for City, failed to find the net for only the third time this season. Newcastle capitalized on City’s missed chances, claiming just their second league victory over Manchester City in 36 meetings.

Eddie Howe celebrated his first win over City in 19 Premier League attempts, providing redemption after Newcastle’s defeats to West Ham and Brentford prior to the break.

The match began nervously for Newcastle, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma nearly gifting them an early lead, but Barnes failed to convert the chance. City continued to struggle in front of goal, with Haaland, Foden, and others squandering opportunities. Donnarumma kept Newcastle at bay multiple times, denying Nick Woltemade and others, while Foden’s penalty claims were dismissed despite Fabian Schar’s harsh tackle.

Eventually, Barnes broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a precise low strike past Donnarumma, only for Dias to respond immediately with a deflected effort to level for City. But Newcastle swiftly regained the lead when Woltemade’s header found Guimaraes, whose rebound was volleyed home by Barnes. After a prolonged VAR review, the goal was upheld, delighting the home crowd.

The victory provides Newcastle with a morale-boosting win and stalls Manchester City’s push to close the gap on Arsenal at the top of the table.
