Bayelsa, Canadian City of Brampton Sign 10-Point Bilateral Agreement

Bayelsa State has formalized a 10-point bilateral agreement with the City of Brampton, Toronto, Canada, covering key areas including education, environment, economic development, trade, innovation, urban management, agriculture, energy, culture, tourism, sports, and administrative collaboration.

The agreement was signed by Bayelsa’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biriyai Dambo SAN, on behalf of the state, and by Brampton’s Director of Economic Development, Denise McClure, witnessed by Governor Douye Diri and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown. The signing was part of a three-day Bayelsa-Brampton Trade and Investment Forum held at Brampton City Hall.

In his remarks, Mayor Brown highlighted Brampton’s large Nigerian community of approximately 30,000 and emphasized the city’s desire to strengthen ties with Nigeria in sectors such as agro-processing, entertainment, innovation, sports, and medical technology. He noted Brampton’s openness to collaboration, describing Nigeria’s emerging opportunities as a strategic moment for engagement.

Governor Diri said Bayelsa and Brampton have significant potential for collaboration, citing Bayelsa’s rich gas and oil resources, growing ICT hub, and agro-processing opportunities. He stressed the mutual benefits of leveraging Brampton’s expertise in ICT, food security, healthcare, and skills development to foster economic growth in Bayelsa.

The Governor directed the Bayelsa Investment Promotion Agency (BIPA) to coordinate with Brampton’s team to implement the agreement and extended an invitation to Mayor Brown for a reciprocal visit to Bayelsa.
