British boxing veteran Derek Chisora has revealed that
he now uses prescribed medical cannabis to manage chronic pain caused by more
than two decades in professional boxing.
The 42-year-old heavyweight fighter said the physical
toll of his long career has left him dealing with constant pain across several
parts of his body, particularly his knees and hands.
Speaking while unveiling a new awareness platform
called WarOnPain, Chisora explained that many people only see the excitement of
boxing but rarely understand the lasting damage fighters endure after years in
the ring.
According to him, recovery became much harder as he
grew older, with persistent pain now forming part of his everyday life after
over 20 years in the sport.
Chisora stressed that his treatment is strictly
medical and legally prescribed, distancing it from recreational cannabis use.
He said the goal is to promote awareness about regulated medical options
available to people suffering from long-term pain conditions in the United
Kingdom.
The boxer disclosed that his prescription involves a
10-gram pouch of medical cannabis flower containing 27 percent THC and less
than one percent CBD. He said the medication is administered through a dry herb
vaporiser under the supervision of a specialist clinician.
Beyond his personal experience, Chisora said he hopes
to support former athletes, military veterans, and others quietly battling
physical and mental health challenges.
He noted that many individuals dealing with chronic
pain often feel abandoned or believe they have exhausted all available
treatment options, adding that his new initiative aims to provide information
and encourage safer access to approved medical care.
