The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has
appointed a new centre referee for the highly anticipated quarter-final
showdown between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Algeria’s Desert Foxes.
CAF had initially selected Omar Artan to officiate the
encounter, but the appointment was later withdrawn amid rising concerns and
tensions over officiating decisions at the ongoing tournament.
Following the change, the African football governing
body has now confirmed Senegalese referee Issa Sy as the match official for the
crucial fixture, scheduled to take place on Saturday in Marrakech.
Issa Sy is familiar with the 2025 Africa Cup of
Nations, having previously served as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during
the group-stage match between Morocco and Tanzania.
His appointment is expected to ease concerns ahead of
the high-stakes clash, as both Nigeria and Algeria compete for a place in the
semi-finals of the tournament.
