Arsenal’s Champions League journey ended
at the semi-final stage after a second consecutive defeat to Paris
Saint-Germain, who secured a 2-1 victory on the night and a 3-1 aggregate
triumph to book their place in the final against Inter Milan.
Despite a spirited performance at the Parc des
Princes, Arsenal could not overturn the first-leg deficit. Bukayo Saka gave the
visitors hope with a second-half goal but missed a golden opportunity moments
later that could have reignited the contest. Earlier, Fabian Ruiz opened the
scoring for PSG with a thunderous half-volley in the 27th minute, capitalizing
on a defensive clearance from a set piece. Achraf Hakimi then doubled the lead
midway through the second half with a precise finish.
The Gunners, chasing their first piece of silverware
under Mikel Arteta this season, dominated possession but struggled to break
down a resolute PSG side that leaned on counter-attacking tactics and the
brilliance of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG, who lost to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals
last year and were beaten by Bayern Munich in the 2020 final, will now face
Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich. Inter reached the final after a dramatic 7-6
aggregate win over Barcelona in a pulsating encounter.
For Arsenal, the defeat marks another painful chapter
in their pursuit of European glory, extending their trophy drought for yet
another season.
