Popular social media activist, Martins Otse, widely
known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Just Liberation News Media reports that VDM had been
detained since his arrest last Friday in Abuja by operatives of the anti-graft
agency.
His detention sparked nationwide outcry, particularly
among Nigerian youths who took to various social media platforms demanding his
immediate and unconditional release.
The EFCC, in a statement on Tuesday, said the
activist’s arrest followed multiple petitions against him. The Commission also
claimed that several invitations were sent to VDM, which he allegedly failed to
honour.
Confirming his release on Wednesday evening, activist
and politician Omoyele Sowore posted a brief update on his official Facebook
page: “VDM Released!”
Further details surrounding the conditions of his
release were yet to be disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
