Uncertainty surrounds a reported airstrike in Jilli, a border community near Damasak in Borno State, following claims by residents that civilians were affected during a military operation.

Jilli, located over 200 kilometres from Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, is situated in a volatile region frequently affected by insurgent activities.

Local sources said the incident occurred while traders were conducting business at a market, with several people reportedly injured. However, the claims have not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.

An eyewitness who visited Geidam Specialist Hospital reported that multiple victims were receiving treatment, adding that the facility’s Accident and Emergency unit had become overwhelmed as more injured individuals were brought in.

Another resident suggested that a military aircraft had been monitoring suspected insurgents believed to have entered the market area, allegedly to collect levies from locals, before the incident occurred.

Despite these reports, both Yobe and Borno State governments have not issued official statements confirming the situation.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force acknowledged conducting air operations within the Jilli axis but did not provide details regarding civilian casualties.

In a statement signed by Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force explained that the mission involved targeted follow-up airstrikes on suspected terrorist locations on April 11, 2026.

The operation, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI, was aimed at tracking and eliminating insurgent groups attempting to regroup in the area.

According to the statement, the strikes were based on credible intelligence and were part of ongoing efforts to restrict the movement of terrorist elements and prevent further attacks on both civilians and security personnel.

The Air Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining stability in the North-East, though it did not directly address the reports of civilian harm.

As investigations continue, the situation remains unclear, with residents expressing concern over the incident and authorities yet to confirm the full details.
