A court in Kaduna has fixed April 14, 2026, to deliver
its ruling on the bail application filed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai.
During proceedings on Wednesday, both the defence and
prosecution presented their final submissions regarding the request for bail.
Defence, Prosecution Clash Over Bail
Counsel to El-Rufai, Iyamu Oyewole, argued that bail
is a fundamental constitutional right. He maintained that his client has strong
ties within Nigeria and is not a flight risk.
However, the prosecution opposed the request, warning
that granting bail could allow the former governor to interfere with witnesses
or hinder ongoing investigations.
Court Adjourns Decision
After hearing both sides, the presiding judge, Rilwan
Aikawa, adjourned the case and scheduled April 14 for a ruling on the matter.
The court also ordered that El-Rufai remain in the
custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences
Commission (ICPC) pending the decision.
Charges and Court Atmosphere
El-Rufai is currently facing trial over allegations of
financial misconduct and abuse of office brought against him by the
anti-corruption agency.
He appeared in court on Wednesday morning under heavy
security presence, as authorities anticipated a large turnout of supporters and
political observers.
His legal team had formally filed the bail application
a day earlier, seeking his release while the case continues.
