The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was officially launched
on Sunday night at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, as a vibrant
and electrifying opening ceremony ushered in Africa’s biggest football
festival.
Held under steady rainfall, the ceremony still
delivered a breathtaking spectacle, blending music, dance, stunning visuals and
fireworks in a celebration of African culture, unity and the spirit of
football. Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido and Moroccan-American rapper
French Montana headlined the show, appearing in matching maroon outfits that
reflected the tournament’s colour theme.
The duo were joined by acclaimed music producer RedOne
and hundreds of performers, who created striking formations and mosaics
symbolising Africa’s 54 nations encircling the iconic AFCON trophy—a powerful
representation of continental unity.
The night marked Davido’s first AFCON appearance since
2017, a return that generated widespread excitement among Nigerian fans. Social
media buzzed with reactions as supporters celebrated the global recognition of
the award-winning artiste. Fellow Nigerian musicians, including Olamide, also
shared moments from the performance in solidarity.
The energy from the opening ceremony carried straight
into football action, with host nation Morocco securing a 2–0 victory over
Comoros in the tournament’s opening match. The win sent a clear message of
Morocco’s ambition to capitalise on home advantage and mount a serious title
challenge.
