The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has
ordered the deployment of special military forces and aerial surveillance units
to Oyo State following a series of recent kidnapping incidents across the
state.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the operation
is designed to strengthen ongoing security efforts, improve intelligence
gathering, and ensure those behind the attacks are tracked down and arrested.
Military spokesperson Michael Onoja said the Armed
Forces were fully aware of the growing security concerns in Oyo State and
extended condolences to families and communities affected by the abductions.
He explained that the Defence Chief had directed an
expanded security response involving specialised ground troops supported by
aerial monitoring operations in collaboration with state security agencies.
According to Onoja, intelligence-driven military
operations have already started producing positive results, with troops
maintaining pressure on criminal elements operating in affected areas.
The Defence Headquarters also released operational
statistics for May 2026, revealing that security forces recorded multiple
arrests, rescued kidnapped victims, recovered weapons, and intercepted illegal
petroleum products during nationwide operations.
Authorities acknowledged that security operations
across the country produced mixed outcomes but noted improvements in the number
of arrests and successful rescue missions.
The renewed military action in Oyo follows a wave of
kidnappings in the state, including the abduction of students and teachers in
Oriire as well as staff members of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in
Ibadan.
The military reiterated its commitment to restoring
security and ensuring the safety of residents in the affected communities.
