Legendary music producer and entrepreneur Dr. Dre has
officially joined the global billionaire ranks after appearing for the first
time on Forbes’ list of The Richest People in the World, released on
Tuesday, March 10.
According to the updated ranking, Dr. Dre now has an
estimated net worth of $1 billion, largely built from his decades-long
career in music and the success of his headphone company, Beats Electronics.
The hip-hop icon is currently ranked 3,332nd
richest person in the world, tying with global music superstar Beyoncé. His
inclusion on the list also makes him the second-richest hip-hop artist,
behind Jay-Z, and the sixth musician overall to feature among the
world’s billionaires.
Dr. Dre’s billionaire recognition comes 12 years
after he publicly claimed to be hip-hop’s first billionaire during the 2014
sale of Beats Electronics to Apple for $3 billion. However, after the
deal was completed, Dre reportedly earned around $500 million, which
made him the richest hip-hop artist at the time but still short of the
billionaire mark.
In 2022, his estimated wealth reportedly
dropped to $400 million. A year later, he sold a portion of his music
assets to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group for about $250 million.
The deal reportedly included two of his solo
albums, his share of royalties from the legendary rap group N.W.A, his producer
royalties, and parts of the songwriter share of his music catalog,
including tracks linked to his iconic album The Chronic.
Beyond music, Dr. Dre has continued to grow his
fortune through investments and real estate ventures. Most recently, the
producer sold his luxury home in Malibu, California, for $16.5 million,
further adding to his wealth.
