Authorities have reportedly uncovered cocaine worth an
estimated $8.4 million concealed inside a shipment linked to Skims, the
underwear brand owned by reality TV star and business mogul Kim Kardashian.
Jakub Jan Konkel, 40, was sentenced to 13 years and
six months in prison on Monday after the National Crime Agency found that he
stashed drugs inside his truck carrying 28 pallets of Skims clothing from the
Netherlands.
Konkel, from northern Poland, was stopped by Border
Force officers at the Port of Harwich in Essex, England, when he arrived by
ferry with his truck full of the celebrity shapewear in September.
After X-raying the vehicle, investigators found that
Konkel had stopped during the journey to collect 90 packages of cocaine,
weighing a total of 198 pounds. The drugs were then hidden in a specially
adapted compartment in the truck’s back doors. Officials estimated the street
value at roughly $8.4 million.
Border Force said the Skims shipment itself was
legitimate and that neither the exporter nor the importer of the clothing was
connected to the smuggling operation.
Konkel initially denied knowledge of the drugs, but
later confessed to agreeing to smuggle the cocaine for 4,500 euros (about
$5,276).
