The Department of State Services (DSS) has given human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, one week to retract what it described as a “false, malicious, and inciting” social media post about President Bola Tinubu.

In a letter dated September 7, the DSS accused Sowore of using his August 26 X (formerly Twitter) post to criminally defame the President. Sowore had described Tinubu as a “criminal,” alleging that the President lied when he claimed corruption no longer existed under his administration.

The security agency, through its Director of Legal Services, Uwem Davies, said the remarks were derogatory and capable of provoking public unrest. It warned that failure to retract the statement within the stipulated time would compel the DSS to “explore all lawful means to protect national security and public order.”

The DSS further stated that Sowore’s post has already “sparked anger among citizens” and posed risks of “public disturbance, disunity, and even insurrection.”

Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has had a long history of clashes with Nigerian authorities over his activism and criticism of government policies.
