Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has declared a
national holiday to celebrate the country's stunning 2-1 victory over Germany
at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The dramatic triumph on Thursday, June 25, secured
Ecuador's place in the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best
third-placed teams. It is only the second time in the nation's history that La
Tri have progressed beyond the group stage at a FIFA World Cup, matching their
achievement at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Ecuador entered the decisive Group Stage encounter
under intense pressure after collecting just one point from their opening two
matches. Their hopes appeared to suffer an early setback when Germany took the
lead just two minutes into the game, with Leroy Sané finishing from a
well-worked move involving Florian Wirtz.
However, Sebastian Beccacece's side responded almost
immediately. Seven minutes later, Nilson Angulo restored parity after calmly
finishing a precise through ball from Pedro Vite.
The South Americans completed a remarkable comeback in
the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata found the back of the net to seal a famous
victory and send Ecuador into the last 16.
Following the final whistle, President Noboa praised
the players and coaching staff for defying expectations and delivering one of
the greatest moments in Ecuadorian football history.
In a message posted on X, the president thanked the
team for overcoming adversity and bringing pride and joy to the nation. He
concluded by announcing a national holiday in celebration of the historic
achievement, ending his message with the words, "Long live Ecuador!"
