British singer Ed Sheeran has addressed the
controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from the remaining US dates of his
tour, apologising to fans and speaking publicly about the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Sheeran spoke during his concert at Lincoln Financial
Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 19, marking his first performance
since Macklemore was dropped from the remaining US shows on the Loop Tour.
The singer told the audience that he had never
intended to become a political activist but found himself at the centre of a
heated debate over free speech following the controversy.
“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never
wanted to be an activist musician,” Sheeran said, explaining that the situation
had placed him in the middle of a major debate about freedom of expression.
He apologised for the way the situation had unfolded,
saying he was “so, so sorry” and acknowledging that he had made mistakes while
dealing with the controversy.
Sheeran Speaks on Israel-Gaza Conflict
Sheeran also addressed the wider Israel-Gaza conflict,
condemning the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack on Israel as “horrific.”
He described the subsequent situation in Gaza as
“catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” while expressing deep
concern over the loss of civilian lives, particularly children.
“My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation
and loss of civilian lives, of children’s lives,” the singer said.
Sheeran also raised concerns about what he described
as “systemic injustice” in the West Bank.
Why Macklemore Was Removed
Macklemore was removed from the remaining US shows
after making pro-Palestinian comments during an earlier performance at MetLife
Stadium in New Jersey, where he said “Free Palestine” on stage.
The rapper has claimed that New England Patriots owner
Robert Kraft, whose company owns Gillette Stadium, objected to his
participation and played a significant role in the pressure that eventually
resulted in his removal.
Kraft, however, has defended his position, citing what
he described as Macklemore’s history of “antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.”
Sheeran has maintained that the decision to remove
Macklemore was not his. According to the singer, Macklemore’s agreement was
with the tour promoter, while several stadium operators had raised objections
to his continued participation.
Other Artists Withdraw From Tour
The dispute also resulted in other supporting acts
withdrawing from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore, leaving Sheeran
without an opening act for his Philadelphia performance.
Sheeran said he spent the week speaking with venues in
an attempt to resolve the situation.
He also expressed concern about venues seeking advance
approval over what artists can say during performances, framing the issue as
part of the broader debate over freedom of expression.
Pro-Palestinian Protest Held Outside Venue
Ahead of the Philadelphia concert, pro-Palestinian
demonstrators gathered outside Lincoln Financial Field.
The Philadelphia Police Department said it was
monitoring the situation and would adjust its response according to public
safety requirements.
The controversy also led some ticket holders to seek
refunds, while others chose to attend the concert despite the dispute.
Sheeran told the Philadelphia crowd that he wanted his
shows to remain spaces where people with different views could come together.
He said his music is ultimately intended to promote
love, hope and unity, while reiterating that maintaining his commitment to his
fans remains central to his approach to performing.
