US President Donald Trump has barred journalists from
CNN, MS NOW and Politico from accessing the White House, accusing the outlets
of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news.”
Trump announced the decision on September 18, saying
the three media organisations had engaged in reporting he considered false and
unfavorable to his administration. He also warned that other news organisations
could face similar restrictions.
The ban was enforced the following day, when reporters
from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied access to the White House. Their
press credentials were deactivated or confiscated as they arrived to cover the
administration.
Trump Defends Media Ban
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump
defended his decision and said the country needed what he described as honest
journalism.
“You get so tired of reading and seeing fake news,”
Trump said, adding that there could be more media organisations joining the
three outlets on the restricted list.
When asked whether he was attempting to intimidate the
press from carrying out its work, Trump rejected the suggestion.
“No, no, no. I dislike dishonest press like you,” he
said, while accusing reporters of producing false stories.
Trump also argued that media organisations should not
be allowed to repeatedly publish what he considers false reports.
Politico Subscription Claim
Trump specifically criticised Politico, alleging that
the publication had received an $8 million government subscription arrangement
under former President Joe Biden.
He described the alleged payment as “illegal” and
claimed it was intended to support the publication.
The claim formed part of Trump's broader criticism of
media organisations he believes have treated his administration unfairly.
More Outlets Could Be Targeted
Trump has suggested that the ban could eventually
extend beyond CNN, MS NOW and Politico.
Reuters reported that he indicated other outlets could
be barred from the White House, while AP reported that Trump gave no detailed
explanation of how the initial ban would be implemented when he first announced
it.
The president has also criticised other major news
organisations, including The Washington Post and The New York Times.
Media Outlets Consider Legal Action
The affected organisations have pushed back against
the restrictions and indicated that they could challenge the decision legally.
CNN said it would continue its White House coverage
and defend its role in holding the government accountable. MS NOW and Politico
similarly said they intended to defend their First Amendment rights.
The White House Correspondents’ Association also
called for the three outlets’ access to be restored, arguing that excluding
journalists based on their coverage could have broader implications for press
access.
The dispute has intensified an ongoing confrontation
between the Trump administration and sections of the US news media, while
raising questions about the constitutional protections surrounding press access
and freedom of the press.
