Police in Ghana's Bono Region have arrested eight
Nigerian nationals for allegedly beating a 21-year-old fellow Nigerian as part
of his initiation into an internet fraud operation at Kotokrom, a suburb of the
Sunyani West Municipality.
According to a statement from the Bono Regional Police
Command on October 9, 2026, officers from the Regional Operations Unit
responded to a distress call at about 4:30 p.m. on October 4, reporting that a
group of people were attacking a man at Kotokrom. Officers rushed to the scene
and found the victim, Godstime Umukoro, with multiple marks of assault on his
body. All eight suspects were arrested there.
The suspects are Peter Mbam, 24; Godwin Moses, 26;
Humble Oweifah, 18; Osas Ogbemudia, 30; Samuel Aisosa, 22; Ashile Godbess, 24;
Alexander Uyuo, 30; and Patrick Romans, 25. They reportedly told investigators
that the beating was part of an initiation process they had also gone through
before joining the fraud business.
Preliminary investigations also uncovered an alleged
online fraud scheme involving the suspects and a man named Nwachukwu King
Augustine, described as their chairman. Police say Augustine brought the
suspects to Ghana, where they allegedly used downloaded photographs of foreign
military personnel to deceive victims online. They reportedly posed as soldiers
stationed at the war front in Yemen, struck up conversations with their targets
and collected money from them, which was then paid into the account of their
purported boss.
The Bono Regional Police Command commended members of
the public for their swift intervention and promised continued collaboration
with residents to combat crime in the region. Police have not said whether the
eight suspects have been formally charged in court.
