No fewer than 11 passengers lost their lives in a
tragic road accident along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway after a vehicle
reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the Eruku Bridge.
The fatal crash occurred on Sunday night and involved
a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ. According to reports,
the vehicle lost control, overturned, and fell from the bridge, trapping all
occupants inside after the doors became jammed.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the
Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi, said all 11 occupants
of the vehicle died in the accident.
The victims were identified as 10 adult males and one
adult female.
Odunsi explained that rescue operatives from the FRSC
Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene following distress
calls about the crash.
He added that FRSC officials, assisted by members of
the local community, had to dismantle parts of the wrecked vehicle to recover
the bodies of the victims trapped inside.
The remains of the deceased were later evacuated to
the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC reportedly
identified suspected driving under the influence and overloading as possible
causes of the accident.
Reacting to the tragedy, Ogun State Sector Commander
of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the
victims and urged motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to be
extra cautious, particularly during night journeys.
He also stressed the importance of responsible
driving, warning against reckless behaviour, overloading, and impaired driving
on highways.
