A supporter of Everton has been arrested on suspicion
of racially abusing Antoine Semenyo during the club’s match against Manchester
City on Monday night.
In a statement, Everton confirmed that a 71-year-old
man was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence
after the incident was reported by both supporters and stewards inside Hill
Dickinson Stadium.
The club strongly condemned the act, stating that
racism and discrimination in any form are unacceptable and have no place in
football or society. It added that swift action from fans, stewards, and
Merseyside Police led to the identification of the individual involved, with
further disciplinary measures expected in line with the club’s zero-tolerance
policy.
Everton also urged supporters to report any incidents
of discrimination or anti-social behaviour through official channels, including
stadium staff or confidential reporting systems.
Meanwhile, Manchester City also confirmed that
defender Marc Guéhi was subjected to racist abuse on social media following the
match. The club welcomed the quick response from Everton and law enforcement
authorities in addressing the incident.
City added that it will continue to support both
Semenyo and Guéhi, stressing that discrimination of any kind will not be
tolerated in the sport.
