Morocco booked their place in the Round of 16 of the
2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty
shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as Morocco's hero,
producing a decisive save to deny Crysencio Summerville from the spot before
Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty to seal victory for the Atlas
Lions.
The result sets up a last-16 meeting with Canada in
Houston on Saturday.
The knockout tie burst into life in the closing
moments of normal time after Morocco snatched a dramatic equaliser through Issa
Diop. The defender headed home from Chemsdine Talbi's cross in the first minute
of stoppage time to cancel out the Netherlands' earlier lead and force extra
time.
The Dutch had looked set for victory after Liverpool
forward Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Playing
just days after his partner confirmed the loss of the couple's unborn child,
Gakpo celebrated emotionally as teammates gathered around him in support.
Morocco had been the more threatening side for much of
the contest despite the Netherlands enjoying more possession.
The North Africans nearly opened the scoring in the
first half when Neil El Aynaoui met Achraf Hakimi's corner with a glancing
header, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen reacted brilliantly to keep the effort
out.
Verbruggen was called into action again moments later,
producing another impressive save to tip Hakimi's powerful strike over the
crossbar.
The fiercely contested encounter also featured several
heavy challenges, with both teams testing the patience of referee Wilton
Sampaio throughout the match.
The Netherlands' best opportunity before the break
came when Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven unleashed a powerful long-range
effort that was brilliantly turned over the bar by Bounou.
Ronald Koeman's tactical changes appeared to pay off
in the second half after introducing striker Wout Weghorst, who immediately
influenced the game by flicking on a long pass into the path of Summerville.
The winger then squared the ball for Gakpo, who finished from close range to
give the Dutch the advantage.
However, Morocco refused to surrender and found a
dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time through Diop's header.
In extra time, Morocco came close to taking the lead
when Soufiane Rahimi raced through on goal, only for Verbruggen to produce
another outstanding save.
The match eventually went to penalties, where Morocco
recovered after Neil El Aynaoui missed their opening spot-kick. Bounou's
crucial save from Summerville shifted the momentum before Saibari confidently
converted the decisive penalty to send Morocco into the next round of the
tournament.
