The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old
man, Chinecherem Ugwuagu, for allegedly robbing a resident while
disguised in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe,
disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the suspect was arrested
on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway by operatives
attached to the Safer Highway Patrol.
According to Ndukwe, Ugwuagu was intercepted while
escaping on a robbed Carter motorcycle. Recovered items included a gun-like
object fashioned from a lotion container, clothes, a bank ATM
card, and other belongings stolen from the victim.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect
had earlier broken into a residence at 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area,
where he threatened the victim with the imitation firearm before fleeing with
the stolen items.
“The suspect dressed in the NYSC uniform to avoid
detection but was arrested by eagle-eyed operatives,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus
Giwa, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism,
assuring that the suspect would be charged to court upon the completion
of investigations.
Giwa further reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to
safeguarding lives and property in Enugu State and urged residents to remain
law-abiding and assist the police with credible information.
“We will continue to ensure the safety of lives and
property across Enugu State,” the CP assured.
