As of 9:04 pm on Saturday, results from polling units
across the six Federal Capital Territory (FCT) local councils began trickling
in, hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted
the elections.
The Kwali Area Council chairmanship results were
56.72% uploaded, while Gwagwalada’s chairmanship seat showed 65.68% completion.
INEC is also uploading results from the councillorship and chairmanship polls
in the FCT alongside bye-election results from Kano State and Rivers State via
the IReV portal.
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan reiterated that the
e-transmission of results is in accordance with Nigerian law and praised
officials for the timely deployment of election materials. He confirmed that
the polls have been peaceful across the FCT and emphasized that credible area
council elections will strengthen confidence in grassroots democracy ahead of
the 2027 general elections.
Earlier this week, President Bola Tinubu assented to
the Electoral Act 2026, which allows for electronic transmission of results
with a manual backup option in case of technological failure. While the Senate
included this manual contingency, the House of Representatives initially pushed
for real-time transmission, but both chambers ultimately agreed on the Senate’s
version.
