The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved
?142.03 billion for the construction of six modern bus terminals in each of
Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, marking a landmark federal intervention in road
transport infrastructure beyond mere road construction.
Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, announced the
decision on Wednesday after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed
Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The contract was awarded to Messrs
Planet Project Limited, the company behind the Lagos Oshodi Transport
Interchange.
The terminals will be built in Abeokuta
(South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja
(North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Warri (South-South).
Alkali said these locations were selected based on their economic viability and
potential to enhance national connectivity.
“The absence of purpose-built bus terminals in the
country has contributed to crimes, road traffic accidents, and even the
proliferation of arms on highways,” Alkali stated. “This initiative aims to
improve commuter safety, boost transport efficiency, and create an organised
hub for interstate travel.”
The ?142 billion project will feature world-class
facilities, including waiting lounges, ticketing booths, loading bays, driver
rest areas, convenience facilities, and surveillance systems.
A Proven Track Record
Planet Projects Limited has a history of delivering
large-scale transport infrastructure. In May 2024, the firm secured a ?51
billion contract to build bus terminals and other transport facilities in
Abuja. It is also responsible for the five new terminals being launched today
in Enugu State.

The Ministry of Transportation says construction will
commence in the coming months, with each terminal expected to meet
international standards and serve as a model for future transport projects
across Nigeria.
