The Federal Government has commenced the
reconstruction and dualisation of the 56.5-kilometre Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode Road, a
major transport corridor linking Oyo and Ogun states.
The project was flagged off on Monday at Idi-Ape,
Ibadan, with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun representing President Bola
Tinubu.
The Federal Government said the project is expected to
improve connectivity, reduce travel time, strengthen commerce, boost
agricultural activities, create jobs and address security challenges along the
corridor.
President Tinubu described the Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode route
as a critical economic artery connecting Ibadan, Ijebu-Ode and the Lekki
economic axis, with wider links across the South-West.
He said the project would involve approximately 58
kilometres of dual carriageway constructed with continuous reinforced concrete
pavement to improve durability and safety.
According to the President, the contractor has
committed to completing the project in less than 24 months. He therefore urged
the contractor to mobilise fully and adhere to approved specifications and
timelines.
Tinubu also appealed to communities along the route to
cooperate with contractors and government agencies, warning against
encroachment, disruptions and demands that could delay construction.
Works Minister Dave Umahi disclosed that President
Tinubu had also directed the immediate reconstruction and dualisation of the
70-kilometre Ibadan–Abeokuta Road, with the procurement process already
underway.
Umahi said Oyo State currently has 17 major road
projects among the 47 Federal Government projects being executed across the
South-West.
He further highlighted other ongoing projects,
including the Badagry–Sokoto Road, Oyo–Ogbomoso Road and the resuscitated
Oyo–Ibadan Road.
Stakeholders from the affected communities welcomed
the project, saying the reconstruction would improve access to farms, markets,
schools and other economic centres while reducing accidents and insecurity.
The Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode Road contract was awarded on May
5, 2026, and construction commenced on July 11, 2026. The project is scheduled
for completion by June 10, 2029.
