The Federal Government of Nigeria has honoured the
country’s female national basketball team, D’Tigress, following their
remarkable fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket Women title win. Each team
member has been awarded the Order of the Niger (OON), alongside a cash
reward of $100,000 and a furnished apartment.
In addition, members of the coaching and technical
crew, led by Coach Rena Wakama, received $50,000 each in
recognition of their vital role in the team’s success.
The announcement was made during a celebratory
reception hosted at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim
Shettima, commended the team for making the nation proud. Also present was
the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who applauded the team’s
resilience and dominance.
This gesture mirrors a similar recognition extended
last week to Nigeria’s Super Falcons after winning their 10th Women’s
Africa Cup of Nations title.
In Sunday’s final, D’Tigress triumphed over Mali with
a commanding 78-64 victory, sealing their seventh AfroBasket title
and extending an incredible unbeaten run—29 consecutive games since 2015.
With this historic win, D’Tigress has firmly
established itself as the most dominant force in African women’s basketball.
