The Federal Government has inaugurated an automotive training centre at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s automotive industry, accelerate electric vehicle (EV) production, and promote technology transfer.

The initiative, which aligns with the National Automotive Policy, aims to promote local vehicle manufacturing, achieve 40% local content, and attain 30% production of electric vehicles in the country, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Enoh, said the centre would equip youths, artisans, and technicians with modern skills in automotive technology, including the maintenance and handling of EVs.

“This centre is part of government’s broader plan to strengthen the automotive industry, foster innovation, and boost economic growth,” Enoh said. He added that the project would also drive technology transfer and position Nigeria as a competitive player in global automotive manufacturing.

Nationwide Training Network
The LASUSTECH facility is one of 21 automotive training centres established across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones to ensure equitable access to skills development. According to Enoh, more centres will be created to expand opportunities, stimulate economic activities, and reduce unemployment-driven social challenges.

Stakeholders’ Perspectives

  • Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the automotive sector as the bedrock of industrial development, noting that the new centre would expose trainees to advanced diagnostic tools and global-standard service protocols. He highlighted three pillars guiding the project: providing industry-relevant skills, setting standards for consumer protection, and creating jobs.
  • NADDC Director-General, Oluwemimo Osanipin, said the training hub aligns with the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) and will deliver hands-on training for artisans, engineers, and technicians. He emphasized that the initiative would enhance local content in vehicle assembly and create an enabling environment for producing Nigerian-made vehicles that meet global standards.
  • LASUSTECH Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, expressed pride in hosting the facility, stressing its role in concept design, prototyping, and commercialization. He said the university’s IMPACT agenda is in line with the centre’s mission to foster innovation and competitiveness.
