A prominent chieftain of the African Democratic
Congress and former member of the House of Representatives, Abba Anas Adamu,
has reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by kidnappers.
Anas was said to have been kidnapped alongside fellow
Jigawa politician Ali Tukur Gantsa while travelling from Kano to Abuja last
Wednesday to attend an ADC congress.
According to sources close to the family, the
abductors initially demanded a ransom of ?100 million before negotiations
reportedly reduced the amount to ?50 million.
Reports indicated that the victims were taken into a
forested area around Jere, where they were held for several days.
Family sources disclosed that Anas, who reportedly
suffered from asthma and hypertension, was unable to access his medications
during captivity, causing his health condition to worsen significantly.
Despite attempts by Gantsa to support and encourage
him, the former lawmaker allegedly became increasingly weak before eventually
dying in the kidnappers’ camp.
Sources further claimed that the abductors initially
concealed news of Anas’s death from the family while ransom negotiations
continued.
It was gathered that after the ransom payment was
eventually delivered by the deceased’s son and driver, Gantsa was released
while Anas’s body was handed over to relatives.
As of the time of reporting, the Jigawa chapter of the
ADC had not released an official statement concerning the incident.
However, ADC chieftain Sabon Nakudu confirmed the
development in a condolence message shared on Facebook, praying for the
deceased’s soul.
Family members also disclosed that arrangements were
underway to transport the late politician’s remains to Kano for burial.
Abba Anas Adamu represented the Guri, Kiri-Kasamma,
and Birniwa federal constituency in the House of Representatives between 2007
and 2011.
