A widespread internet disruption on Monday temporarily took down multiple popular websites and apps after a major outage hit Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s largest cloud computing providers.

Messages on AWS’s maintenance site confirmed “increased error rates” across several of its services, adding that engineers were working to restore full operations.

The outage tracker Downdetector showed that the disruption affected a range of major platforms, including Reddit, Disney+, Hulu, Signal, and Delta Air Lines. In Europe, users also reported issues with mobile phone networks, UK banks, WhatsApp, and Tinder.

According to AWS, the problems began around 0711 GMT, originating from its US-East-1 region — a critical infrastructure hub located in northern Virginia.

About two hours later, the company said it was beginning to see “significant signs of recovery,” though some services continued to experience delays as systems came back online.

The US-East-1 region has been the source of several major AWS disruptions in recent years, underscoring how dependent much of the global internet infrastructure remains on the company’s network.
