Guinness World Records (GWR) on Monday confirmed
Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci as the new record holder for the largest
serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice.
The feat was achieved after a nine-hour open-air
cooking session at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, where
Baci prepared 200 units of 20-kg bags of rice in collaboration with Gino
Nigeria.
According to GWR, the attempt — which took nine
months of planning and two months of pot fabrication — produced an
astonishing 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) of jollof rice.
Thousands of people attended the event, which featured
live performances, while Baci and her team carefully measured and documented
every ingredient to comply with strict GWR rules.
What Went Into the Record
The effort produced 16,600 plates of jollof rice,
which were distributed to attendees, in line with GWR’s “no waste” rule.
“This was nine hours of fire, passion, and teamwork,”
Baci said, describing the feat as one of joy, love, and community.
Backstory
This is not Hilda’s first GWR recognition. In June 2023, she was certified as
the record holder for the longest individual cooking marathon, after
cooking for over 93 hours. Although she initially aimed for 100 hours, a
counting error reduced her final tally.
However, her reign was later ended by Irish chef Alan
Fisher, who cooked for 119 hours and 57 minutes, setting a new record.
With this latest achievement, Baci now holds a fresh
Guinness World Record, while the largest serving of Ghanaian-style jollof
rice currently has no holder.
