The Edo State Police Command says it has recovered
?300,000 allegedly extorted from a furniture maker by its operatives in Benin.
Police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, in a statement on
Sunday, said the officers involved, attached to the Oba Market Area Command,
have been arrested and are facing disciplinary action.
The case gained public attention after a social
influencer, Mama Pee, posted a viral video on 11 September accusing the
operatives of extorting the victim. According to her, the officers accused the
man of being an internet fraudster, demanded ?3 million, and eventually forced
him to part with ?300,000.
A follow-up video posted on 13 September confirmed
that the money had been recovered.
Mr Yamu said the cash has been returned to the victim,
and “stern administrative measures” are being enforced to ensure
professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights. He urged residents to report
misconduct through the Public Complaints Bureau or the Complaints Response
Unit.
Cases of police extortion have remained recurring
across Nigeria despite disciplinary actions. Similar incidents were recently
reported in Anambra, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, and Bayelsa states.
