Arsenal secured a hard-fought victory over Sporting CP
in Lisbon, with a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Kai Havertz sealing the win
in their European clash.
Heading into the match at the José Alvalade Stadium,
Arsenal were under pressure following back-to-back defeats against Manchester
City in the League Cup final and Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Despite another below-par performance, Mikel Arteta’s side managed to grind out
a vital result.
Sporting dominated large spells of the game,
particularly in the first half, using their strong home form—having gone 17
matches unbeaten at their stadium—to put Arsenal under sustained pressure.
However, they failed to convert their chances, largely due to impressive
goalkeeping from David Raya, who made several crucial saves to keep the
visitors in the contest.
Arsenal struggled to create clear opportunities and
took a long time to find any attacking rhythm. Their first meaningful effort on
target came late in the first half, highlighting their difficulties in breaking
down the hosts.
The second half saw slight improvement from the
Gunners, but injuries to key players including Martin Ødegaard and Leandro
Trossard added to their concerns.
Sporting came close to taking the lead late in the
game, but Raya’s alertness once again denied them. Just when the match seemed
destined for a draw, Arsenal struck in added time.
A well-timed pass from Gabriel Martinelli split the
defence, allowing Havertz to break free and calmly finish from close range,
securing a crucial away victory for the Premier League leaders.
The result gives Arsenal a slight advantage heading
into the second leg in North London on April 15, where they will aim to secure
a place in the semi-finals. However, Arteta’s side will need to deliver a more
convincing performance if they hope to progress further and challenge for the
title.
Despite recent setbacks, the win serves as a response
to criticism surrounding the team’s mentality, as they continue their push for
silverware this season.
