Nigerian-born defender Ime Okon has drawn criticism
from a section of fans following his inclusion in the South African national
team, Bafana Bafana.
The young defender, who recently received a senior
call-up, has been the subject of debate on social media, with some supporters
questioning his identity due to his Nigerian roots.
Okon returns to the national setup after featuring in
the COSAFA Cup, where he made five appearances and scored once. His latest
selection marks his first full invitation under head coach Hugo Broos.
He had previously missed out on two call-ups due to
injury but has now been included as a replacement for injured defender
Siyabonga Ngezana, who plays for FCSB.
Okon remains the only adjustment in the central
defensive lineup compared to the squad that competed at the 2025 Africa Cup of
Nations.
Despite earning his place in the team, his selection
has triggered mixed reactions, with some fans expressing concerns tied to his
background. His Nigerian heritage—particularly through his late father—has been
at the centre of the discussion.
The situation reflects broader conversations in
international football regarding nationality, eligibility, and identity, as
Okon seeks to cement his position within the South African national team.
