The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has announced the establishment of a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division within its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department. This initiative aims to enhance the credibility and efficiency of the country's electoral processes by leveraging advanced technological solutions.

 Objectives of the AI Division

According to INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the AI Division will focus on:

  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: Utilizing AI to analyze electoral data for informed decision-making.
  • Risk Detection and Mitigation: Employing AI tools to identify and address potential risks in the electoral process.
  • Voter Services Automation: Enhancing voter engagement through automated services.
  • Geo-Spatial Intelligence: Applying AI for logistical optimization, including efficient distribution of electoral materials and polling unit allocation.
  • Combating Misinformation: Using AI to detect and counteract the spread of fake news and manipulated content online.

Olumekun emphasized that the creation of the AI Division is a proactive step to harness the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential negative impacts on elections.

Context and Significance

INEC's decision aligns with global trends where electoral bodies are increasingly adopting AI to improve electoral integrity. The commission has participated in international conferences discussing the impact of AI on elections, highlighting both opportunities and challenges.

This move is part of INEC's broader efforts to reform and modernize Nigeria's electoral system, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and public trust in the democratic process.
