The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says at least 69,376 Nigerians completed their online pre-registration within the first seven hours of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which reopened on Monday.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja.

“The portal went live at 8:30 a.m., and by 3:30 p.m., 69,376 Nigerians had already pre-registered online,” Olumekun said.

Breakdown of Registrants

  • Total registrants: 69,376
  • Male: 33,803 (48.7%)
  • Female: 35,573 (51.3%)
  • Young persons (18–34 years): 48,033 (69.2%)

Olumekun explained that the online registration portal remains accessible round the clock via https://cvr.inecnigeria.org, allowing eligible Nigerians to register at their convenience.

Physical Registration to Begin August 25

INEC further announced that in-person registration will commence on Monday, August 25, 2025, across its 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide. The exercise will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays.

The commission said the process will serve both citizens who prefer physical registration and those who started online but need to complete biometric capture in person.

“Both online and in-person registration will run concurrently for the entire duration of the CVR as contained in INEC’s earlier schedule,” Olumekun noted.

INEC also revealed plans to issue weekly progress updates, beginning next week, with detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability.

Eligibility and Restrictions

The commission reminded Nigerians that the CVR is strictly for citizens who are 18 years and above and have never registered before.

“For clarity, registration is open only to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who are not already registered voters. Double registration is unlawful,” Olumekun cautioned.

However, those seeking transfers between states or the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as those requiring replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), may also participate in the exercise.

What Applicants Should Know

To begin the process, applicants are to log on to https://cvr.inecnigeria.org, where they must create a personal account using a valid email address and phone number.

They will then fill in their details, including full name, date of birth, gender, occupation, and home address, and upload a passport photograph. Once complete, applicants must book an appointment for biometric capture at the nearest INEC centre.

On the scheduled date, registrants are expected to appear physically for fingerprint and facial scans. After this step, INEC issues a Temporary Voter Card (TVC), which will later be exchanged for a Permanent Voter Card (PVC).

INEC emphasized that Nigerians who already possess a valid PVC do not need to register again, as the cards do not expire. Instead, those who lost or damaged their cards can request a replacement through the same online portal.
