The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
has announced that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will begin
nationwide on October 9, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed
this on Monday in Kaduna during the commission’s North-West Zonal Interactive
Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 elections.
Amupitan said the recent Continuous Voter Registration
exercise resulted in more than 10.7 million new voter registrations across the
country.
He stressed the need to address challenges affecting
the distribution of PVCs at the Local Government Area level, warning that
delays and other bottlenecks could prevent eligible Nigerians from exercising
their right to vote.
The INEC chairman also revealed that the commission
was upgrading several aspects of its electoral technology, including voter
verification, result transmission and result management systems.
He specifically mentioned the recently introduced
eEC8A system as part of the commission’s efforts to strengthen the management
and transmission of election results.
According to Amupitan, INEC is also adopting a
“Zero-Failure” approach to election logistics. The strategy includes the early
deployment of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, improved movement and
transportation arrangements, enhanced security coordination and better training
of ad-hoc election personnel.
The commission said the measures are aimed at
improving its operational readiness and ensuring a smoother electoral process
ahead of the 2027 general elections.
