The Independent National Electoral Commission has
directed its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country to
immediately suspend all publicity and preparatory activities for the planned
nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
The exercise had earlier been scheduled to commence on
April 13, 2026, as part of efforts to update Nigeria’s voter register ahead of
the 2027 general elections.
In an earlier directive issued by the commission’s
Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, RECs were instructed to begin groundwork for
the exercise. This included mobilising staff and deploying INEC Voter Enrolment
Devices (IVEDs) to various locations nationwide.
The proposed schedule outlined a phased rollout of the
exercise. It was expected to begin at the local government level from April 13
to May 2, followed by activities at registration areas from May 5 to May 11,
and conclude at polling units between May 13 and May 19.
However, in a subsequent communication, the commission
ordered an immediate pause on all related activities. RECs were specifically
instructed to discontinue publicity campaigns and halt all logistical
arrangements until further notice.
In addition, INEC announced an adjustment to its
upcoming meeting with RECs. The session, initially planned as a physical
gathering, will now be conducted virtually on April 9, 2026, via an online
platform.
Resident Electoral Commissioners have been advised to
remain in their respective states while awaiting further guidance, including
access details for the virtual meeting.
The commission expressed regret over any inconvenience
caused by the sudden change in plans and reiterated its commitment to
maintaining a credible and well-organised electoral process.
