A police officer has lost his life following a violent
attack by suspected bandits on Sayaya village in Matazu Local Government Area
of Katsina State, leaving residents in fear and several properties destroyed.
The attack, which occurred on April 5, 2026, saw armed
assailants storm the community and target a local police facility, where one
officer was killed during the assault.
In addition to the attack on the station, the gunmen
reportedly invaded a Primary Health Care Centre, set vehicles ablaze, and
looted multiple shops, making away with goods and other valuables belonging to
residents.
Eyewitnesses said the incident triggered widespread
panic, forcing many villagers to flee their homes as the attackers operated for
several hours without immediate resistance.
Residents also expressed shock over the development,
noting that the area had experienced relative calm in recent times following a
peace agreement aimed at reducing such attacks.
Following the incident, the Governor of Katsina State,
Dikko Umaru Radda, visited the affected community to assess the level of damage
and interact with residents.
During the visit, the governor inspected the destroyed
facilities and expressed sympathy to those who suffered losses. He also
extended condolences to the police command, particularly the Divisional Police
Officer and other personnel, over the death of their colleague.
In response to the attack, the governor ordered the
immediate deployment of additional security forces to the area, with the aim of
restoring peace and preventing further incidents.
Authorities have assured residents that steps are
being taken to strengthen security and protect lives and property in the
community.
