The Police Command in Anambra has raided
some black spots in the state as part of its operations to rid the state of
criminals ahead of the Imo-Awka masquerade festival.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP
Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Awka.
Ikenga said that the operations in Awka and environs
led to the arrest of one suspect, Nasiru Samaila, male, 25.
He said the operation was carried out by the police
operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awka Sector in the late
evening of May 19.
“The suspect in a bid to escape started shooting
indiscriminately but was subdued by the police team which fired him on his
right leg.
“Unfortunately, one of the police operatives sustained
a gunshot injury and has been taken to the hospital where he is currently
responding to treatment,” he said.
He said that items recovered from the suspect include
one locally made Berretta pistol, live ammunition, one knife and a large
quantity of substances suspected to be hard drugs.
The police spokesman explained that the exercise was
to ensure a crime-free festival.
“The Police Command in Anambra State was acting on
information received over time on how miscreants, under the guise of
celebrating the Imo-Awka masquerade festival, engaged in criminal activities.
“They become unruly and make life unbearable for the
good people of the state, especially residents and indigenes of Awka.,’’ he
said.
According to him, the police have intensified raids
and discreet operations on some identified black spots in Awka and its
environs.
The police spokesman said that the command remained
committed to enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.
